The following statement needs to be retweeted all across America:   From  Candace Engel               TO MY NON RESCUE FRIENDS!!!!!!!  

I care for all my friends deeply but we really need to talk! This is probably going to piss a few people off but please understand my intent here is not to offend anyone, my intent is to make you stop and think for just a moment. I am begging you to read this post in its entirety and absorb what I am saying! I personally believe that most people are simply not aware of the seriousness of the problem I am about to tell you about, if I reach ONE person…..this rant is well worth it! Those of you who are NOT involved in rescue in anyway are probably honestly unaware of the battles that go on every day on Facebook and in text messages, e-mails and phone calls. You are unaware of the tears we shed and the heartache we experience and the frustration we feel! It is a daily struggle to save lives. The constant begging for money, begging for temporary foster homes, begging someone to give a dog a ride to safety so they can have a better life, begging you to PLEASE JUST SHARE MY POST because you never know who you may reach or who may help. My phone is going to explode one day from all the people who reach out to me for help! I barley have time for my own dogs because of the time I spend trying to save others. And I am by no means alone……there are thousands and thousands of us who struggle every day with this issue……. 

I realize this is MY choice, I choose to expose myself to the horrors of what most people are oblivious to or that they simply CHOOSE TO IGNORE!!!!! I make an effort to shield my Facebook friends from most of what I see each day out of respect and because I realize that not everyone is interested in rescue, and because a lot of what I see is graphic and most if it is very sad! But I am done shielding people from the reality of what I see each day! Everyone needs to see the evil that resides alongside us.

HERE is the REALITY and it is EVERYDAY……..Shelters being shut down because the shelter employees are abusing the animals, 200 plus dogs, most of them abused and pregnant, being seized from puppy mills and hoarders. Lost dogs who simply cannot find their way home. Groomers abusing dogs! Sweet little dogs who lay in shelters in their own waste and in shock for days after being hit by a car without so much as pain medication. Pets being surrendered to shelters because the family is going on vacation. Lost dogs whose owners are located but say they “don’t want it anymore.” Pregnant dogs wandering around in the street……laying in the median because she is too weak to make it the rest of the way across the street while HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DRIVE BY HER AND DO NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A sad mama dog sitting in a high kill shelter who may have been abandoned by her owner maybe because she was pregnant but when she was picked up by Animal Control they could not locate the puppies. OR just maybe she had her puppies and she was no longer of use to her owner so they dumped her on the street to fend for herself and sold her puppies for money! Dogs with bullet wounds left untreated! Breeders dumping dogs in remote areas. Dogs running loose in the neighborhoods killing goats, calves and pigs. Dogs left outside in the cold and literally frozen to death. DEAD dogs packed in boxes and thrown in the ditch on the side of the road like trash. Living dogs LOCKED in crates and dumped ALIVE on the side of the road to die! Once sweet dogs who have become aggressive because they have been left by their owners to fend for themselves and then ending up euthanized. Dogs abandoned in homes that their owners have vacated. Shelters run by Police Departments who have no interest in locating homes for strays….they would just assume euthanize them than deal with the paperwork it takes to adopt one into a home. People disguising their trucks as county vehicles and stealing dogs right out of peoples yards for who knows what reason. Rescue organizations unable to help dogs because they literally have no money or place to put them. Dogs surrendered to the shelters by the owners they love! DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS to a dog that is surrendered to a shelter by its owner? DO YOU???????? They can be euthanized IMMEDIATELY because a hold is not required to find the owner. Do you have any idea how many dogs are euthanized in a weeks’ time? EXAMPLE; In one town, NOT COUNTY, ONE TOWN (in Texas) FOURTY plus dogs are euthanized every week! Think about that for a minute……just let that soak in. 40 + dogs in one week in ONE TOWN because of the irresponsibility of human beings. 

YOUNG Dogs, probably a cute little puppy, all wrapped up in a red bow and given as a gift on Christmas Day, found by the grace of God tied to a tree in the middle of the woods because they were no longer wanted. Sometimes it’s just a skeleton and a collar. Litter after litter of puppies thrown into dumpsters and creeks and left to die. Puppies thrown out of moving cars. Puppies dumped on the side of the road because the owners “can’t deal with a litter” but yet they CHOSE NOT TO HAVE THEIR DOG SPAYED!!!!! I see dogs given away as “FREE TO GOOD HOME” on Craig’s list and Facebook that end up being used as bait for dog fighting. People collecting free puppies and dogs from ad’s on Craig’s list and the internet with the intention of torturing them. I have even seen people who have been arrested for collecting free dogs on Craig’s list so they could torture them and eat them! YES…..That’s right……you read that right! EAT THEM! 

I see litter after litter after litter from backyard breeders selling dogs to line their pockets with cash.……..and guess what…….these things I listed above are what happens to those dogs EVERY DAY, ALL DAY, IN EVERY STATE AND IN EVERY COUNTY IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT NEVER ENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

I see dogs being soaked in lighter fluid and set on fire, burned, dragged, tortured, shot with bb guns, bullets and even arrows, they are beaten, abandoned, starved, and yet theses dog still want to have human contact. Personally…..I think dogs are far better than humans ever had time to be. What kind of person does these things to an animal? My parents taught me that if you want to know what kind of person someone is watch how they treat animals (and their waitress). THIS is probably the most honest piece of advice EVER! The way one treats an animal speaks volumes to their character. 

We work our ass off to find a dog a loving home and the horror still isn’t over……. the residual effects of abuse exhibited in behavioral problems! Some people may say it’s “just a dog” and some believe animals forget. BULL !!!!!!!! SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I adopted a rescue over 6 months ago and to this day she flips out when I pick up a broom, she is just now beginning to trust my husband. If there is smoke or steam of any kind in the kitchen she runs and hides. I cannot pick up a regular dog leash because she is so afraid of it she pees. When I bend down to pet her she STILL cowers with her tail between her legs. Sometimes she just sits and shakes uncontrollably from a fear that I cannot explain. She wasn’t born afraid……someone made her that way! 6 MONTHS in my home and she is still afraid! I look at her every day with tears in my eyes because I love her so much and I can’t bear the thought of her past. 

I am so frustrated! I am emotionally and mentally exhausted from seeing dogs abused, abandoned or sentenced to die in a shelter because people choose not to see the depth of this problem, because they would rather turn their head and look away from the ugliness. And believe me it is uglier and darker and more evil than I ever imagined. I have seen and heard things that I could have gone my whole life without knowing. I have seen and heard things I wish I didn’t know. I have seen and heard things that have changed me forever. I am exhausted by the attitude of…. “It’s not my problem” or “someone else will take care of it” STOP IT!!!!! Just FREAKING STOP IT! It IS YOUR PROBLEM…….It is ALL our problem. 

Those of us in rescue...... It's not OUR problem either but yet we do it! We spend TONS of money on dogs that aren’t even our own we spend countless hours cleaning up the mess of people who choose to turn the other cheek and ignore this. We spend so much time on these dogs we don’t even have time to hug our own dogs. We text, and e-mail and make phone calls while our own dogs stare at us from the sofa! We need to come together to fix this! I am begging my friends to consider ways you can help! It doesn’t take much. If you want to help and you don’t know how……message me and I will help you figure it out! 

Please……I am NOT saying that all breeders are bad or irresponsible. What I am saying is that there is no shortage of dogs, pure bred and mixed breeds alike in shelters and in rescues and there are people who struggle every day to save them. The message here is, people who do breed need to be cautious of who they are selling/giving puppies to. I would like to think that most of the people I associate with would be heartbroken if one of their puppies ended up as I have described here. If you do not care what happens to a puppy that you are responsible for than go ahead and unfriend me now because I don’t want to know you! NOT KIDDING! 

If you need help with spay/neuter or veterinary care, there are numerous programs in your county that can help you! THERE IS NO ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE FOR NOT CARING FOR YOUR PET PROPERLY!!!!!!! If you need food, the SPCA will give you food. HELL…..I WILL GIVE YOU FOOD! Reach out to a rescue for help if you need it. You might be amazed what people are willing to do to help you. BUT, If you are one that consciously chooses not to spay/neuter your pets and continually allows your dog to have littler after litter of dogs that you are giving away or selling……GUESS WHAT…….YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
AND if you can look into the eyes of a dog and say “it’s just a dog” or “it’s a dog, they have no feelings” or if you believe that animals have no soul, I have news for you……IT’S YOU THAT HAS NO SOUL.

When you walk a dog on a leash, you can open a pathway to your dog of complete understanding. Not through anger or yanking,  but with subtle calm and assertive commands and corrections that are carefully applied to help your dog to understand your position on the things you approve of and the things you don't approve of.  From there, you can incorporate sounds and hand signals and your body language to help keep your dogs attention and to built a conduit for the transfer of information. 

When I first found Jimmy, a Pomeranian and Terrier mix at a local shelter, he was the one who ran away and wouldn’t let anyone (except maybe two volunteers) actually pick him up or to even get near him.  He was there for 19 months and probably would have never been adopted.  With the help of a young volunteer girl, we were able to corner Jimmy and throw a blanket over him so I could then hold him steady and put a leash over his snarling, snapping and fully frightened face.  He was quite scary. He bit me numerous times and drew blood every time he bit.  I found out that previous to his 19 months at the shelter, he had been abandoned and living at a local car wash for at least 3 months until he was trapped and taken to the shelter.   

Jimmy is like many...many dogs in America, who for any number of reasons, find themselves dumped on the streets or into shelters, where it is hard for them to get placed into another home.  Unfortunately, people really don't look at dogs as family members, as much as they might look at them as expendables and something they could return or just dump when the dog doesn't perform to their expectations.  Dogs don't simply match peoples expectations miraculously through some sort of vulcan mind meld, or through dog human osmosis...Dogs MUST get their directions and rules and understandings from very clear and concise directions from a caring dog owner who wishes only to build a quality relationship between them and their loving companions.  The dog owner needs to make his/her intentions extremely clear and concise (like a parent teaching a child about safety around cars or strangers etc.)  Like the child, the dog also needs to learn how to listen and understand what it's owner is telling them.  This is where I come in!

Most problems between man and dog occur when absolutely no real direction or leadership from the dog owners are given to the dog...other than "NO",  and so the dogs simply revert to what their instincts tell them to do, and therein lies the rub...BECAUSE when a dog believes he is in charge of himself or that he is the master of his own destiny, then dogs will make bad decisions that effect everyone around them, and thus...end up on the streets or in the long growing line of Euthanasia.  I work directly with dog owners and dogs who have never built these relationships and understandings between them.  Jimmy was afraid of people from the beginning when he was abandoned at that car wash.  He needed to learn to have trust again because all he really knew was that, for some reason, he was thrown out the door of his family home and given low odds to survive on his own.  Something he did or even perhaps a way he may have reacted, caused his owner to say "I'm not going to deal with that crap"...and out the door he goes !  The real problem was that the owner didn't really want to spoend the time, or didn't know how to spend their time, teaching Jimmy how to learn to understand what was acceptable and unacceptable to his owner, in a way that fostered Jimmy's learning and understanding.  No wonder Jimmy ran from people! His own people turned against him and sentenced him to a slow and agonizing death while alone on the mean streets!  

I think most people who have had dogs, discover that dogs can be very hard to train and even harder to catch if they do not wish to be caught.  Just try running after a dog who gets out of your fenced in yard or through the front door, who has not been previously trained to listen to it’s master.  Sometimes the shear joy alone of that feeling of freedon and adventure, is enough for a dog to ignore it's owner's orders to return, as it explores the neighborhood to it’s hearts content…or until you catch him, or even worse.  

In my opinion, Leash training is the cornerstone to all communication between man and dog.  PERIOD!~ Without leash training, (unless you are adept in getting and keeping your dog’s attention with your voice and hand signals alone), you will not be able to train any dog to listen to you.  The leash is like the telephone line that runs directly from your thoughts and straight into your dog’s head.  When used properly, without anger or malice or frustrated bad intent, the leash becomes the way to teach your dog valuable information and to keep your dog in the game of learning what you want and don't want.   

Dogs react in many different ways to the leash, from some who immediately submit at the very first tap, to others who scream and holler and fight and bite with all their might just to get out of their feelings of being trapped, or as I like to all it…their view of "Being held down by the man!"  Once the leash is introduced and utilized properly, and the dog begins to realize that they are not trapped and that they actually get good things from responding appropriately to the owners requests, then they can relax and enjoy the ride.  See Jimmy's transformation from fearing the leash to learning how it helped him to connect with me and to all the good things being submissive brings.   This is the video documenting Jimmy's transformation.  https://youtu.be/QXB6fia2McI

NOW FOR TODAY...These pictures with me and my dog Shep, the Wonder Dog, helped me to distinguish myself as a valid dog trainer, both in Florida and here in California.  I trained my dog because I discovered that I could train him, once I had his attention...and that's the trick that I still teach today.  As a novice dog owner, you cannot teach any dog anything unless you have their attention!  I believe it's probably the same with children, but I've never raised any of those...just doggies  :))

Like Children (I'm guessing), they have to pay attention to absorb information, and if they are paying attention to something or someone other than you when you are teaching and talking to them, then I would guess that nothing of substance can get into their memory, like when you are talking to them while they are playing video games etc.  Dogs are the same way in that...if you are trying to teach them about not running into the street, or how to sit, or to stay...and all they seem to be focusing on is trying to get away and go after the squirrel in the tree on the other side of the street, then they might not get the lesson about the danger of cars that you were attempting to show them while they were focusing on that squirrel and not on your lesson!  Right? Be their Leader AND their Trainer, and what I mean by that is...EVERY dog owner should be BOTH with their dog(s)!  Anyone who owns a dog should consider themselves a "Leader" and a "Dog Trainer" when they take on the responsibility of owning an animal.  Some dogs will naturally assume the leader role unless it is challenged by the dog owner.  I say take the leadership away from the dog and show that dog what it has been missing in it's life...the joys of following and listening to their leader.

The Leadership role should be fairly well understood as a goal by most dog owners, but it is easier said than done!  That's the part I mostly end up training the owners specifically about...how to be the "Leader".  The "Dog Trainer" aspect of dog ownership comes when the dog owner begins to discover the need to connect with their dog on the most basic levels of their being, in order to pass on vital and sometimes very useful information the dog should know about...like speeding cars, or who is allowed into the home, and where and when the dog eats, and where and when does the dog sleep, and which piece of furniture is acceptable for the dog to lay on, and which pieces of furniture are not allowed to get on, and where it is acceptable to go to the bathroom, and where it is not acceptable... and when the dog goes on a walk, what is acceptable for how that dog acts and reacts when it comes across others in the neighborhood, whether human or animal while on that walk, and what the dogs responses are to them that are acceptable and unacceptable...are you seeing the picture and pattern here?  You can't pass on any Vital Information or otherwise, that might make your relationship better and your animal safer,  until you have your dog's attention...Period!

Take on the responsibilities of both Leader and Trainer when you have a dog, and your world will be much better for it  :))  Let me help you to "BE WHO YOUR DOG LOOKS UP TO"

In the back of my book, Shea's Lounge, I included some tips on                                                             how to prepare your home for your new dog.  I would like to give those tips to you again:

Things to think about when preparing your home for a new dog.

1. Give your dog a place of his own. It can be a dog bed or a selected piece of your furniture to designate for your new best friend. Cover with a washable fabric.

2. Determine where your dog will sleep. Will it be in your own bed, or in a crate or in a dog bed next to your own bed? Is your dog going to be living indoors only, or outdoors only or both? You must clearly establish this area, then prepare accordingly. You must spend time showing your dog where the bathroom area is, then making sure they can get to it when they need to go. If outdoors, which door will it be, and if a dog door is installed, how to get through that door. If indoors, then you must prepare all necessary pads etc. and then give your dog all access to that area and encourage them to use it at any time. These areas need to be constantly kept clean and sanitary.

3. Beware of curtains and blinds that have cords that can get entangled around your curious dog.

4. Think carefully about electric wires and multiple outlets behind TV’s etc. where dogs may explore, or worse, bite or chew on.

5. Household chemicals, cleaners, poisons etc. need to be above dogs reach or locked in closets or sheds etc.

6. Long Toenails may tear up Leather or fabric couches unless you maintain their length with walks or grooming.

7. Be careful giving your dog things to chew on that are similar to the things you do not wish them to chew on…like an old sock or shoe or anything that has your scent on it . They won’t know the difference when they’re ready to find something else of your’s to chew on.

8. When using rugs in dog areas, make sure they are washable and non slip.

9. Think about the height your dog may be able to reach items of their interest on coffee tables etc. and rearrange your entire home accordingly. Breakables and Food Items need extra scrutiny. Think “Baby Proofing” your home and you’ll be close.

10. Any items on the floor will be deemed fair access by your dog unless you can either: a. Change or preempt their behavior yourself or with a professional dog trainer; b. You remove any and all things you do not wish to be chewed or urinated on; c. You actively redirect your dog’s interest in those certain items to those things they can have that you approve of for them.

11. Nice wood floors and the like may be subjected to scratches. You may need to be able to keep certain areas of your home off limits to your dog, and do it without barricading or fencing it off if possible.

12. Your dog bedding, water and food areas need to be kept clean and in areas where water and dirt may rapidly accumulate, but will not be a problem cleaning.

13. Only specialized enzymatic urine removing cleaners should be used to clean up messes, as most rugs and carpets will retain fluids and smells, and will not stop dogs from reusing those areas.

14. When your dog is continually well groomed with brushing and baths, your home will have less pet hair and dander floating about.

15. Plan on purchasing a dog poop scooper and commit to a weekly pick up of your dog’s waste in the yard. Flies flourish in and around the excrement so your backyard experience will be enhanced without the fly bother and mess’s to smell and step around.

16. Plan on purchasing or designating the: Dog Food, Food and Water Bowls, Chew Toys, Treats, Grooming Supplies, Bedding, Collar and Leash, Carrier, Distemper Shots, ID tags, Veterinarian, Emergency Vet, Location of Dog parks, and local Dog Trainers.

17. Decide whether or not your dog will be allowed on your furniture, in only certain rooms, where he is allowed and not allowed, who feeds, waters, House trains, takes for walks, trains, picks up after them etc.?

18. Do you have other pets your dog will be interacting with? Are they either a predator or maybe other prey to a dog? Are you willing to take the time to help them properly interact or will you ignore them and let them make decisions on what to do with each other?

19. Find time in your schedule to pay quality attention to your new family member. Build a strong trust bond between you and your dog(s). Play catch or chase or any game the dog may like to play outdoors. Be engaged in your dogs welfare and happiness as you would your own child…just don’t raise them as if they are your child. They are animals and must be viewed as such.

*Please note: Some professional advise may be required for implementation of any and or all of the above suggestions . Do not expect to attempt dog ownership without taking professional advise on some or many of these suggestions. All dogs and home living situations are different, so don’t be overwhelmed or embarrassed to ask for help. Online resources are plentiful and most shelter’s have volunteers or staff that can be very helpful.

What can I say about Shea, the runaway? 

I was lucky enough to have Shea for 10 years, and she absolutely lived a good life.  I took her and Shep on my sit on top kayak, through some of Florida's most pristine waterways and some rivers with water so clean you could drink right out of it…seriously.  Shea got to live the theater life alongside Shep, the wonder dog.  At first, Shea and Shep ignored each other, and occasionally growled at each other, but Shea just kept escaping and giving me a clear sign she wanted to be somewhere else.  

I had the option of returning her within a month, and I was only three days away from that possibility.  In the months after I decided to keep her, Shea’s attention to all of the details on the wind became less and less, and into more of howling ghosts she had rather forget.  I saw her face change from happy to terrified to curious and nerve racking…I even watched her begin shivering and I was facing a dilemma because I wanted to give her comfort but I also had the curious scientist side who wanted to observe nature in the raw.  

Her thoughts were so interesting to watch as her ears and face and head tilted as if she was taking dictation from the wind, and there were many times I stared at her without her noticing, and watched her eyes dash and her ears twitch to even the farthest off sounds.  She was a master listener, unlike Shep, she could understand a calm assertive voice and she learned quickly.  She wouldn't get distracted to the point of annoyance during lessons and rehearsals I had arranged for her and Shep prior to their live audience shows.  Shea learned to be a performer and to listen and respond on cue, but Shep was keen at his commands and rarely diverted his routine within the 16- 22 performances any play or musical might run over a 3-4 week span.  I could actually see Shea pumping herself up for the audience, whining to get out and begin her shows.  Shep never really swayed much, but when he did… it was big.

Shea was always fairly present and responded to my commands. I tested her everywhere I took my dogs, Shep had gone through the drill years earlier.  I always had them off leash and yet firmly on my voice leash or what I call my extended leash, that can go as far as the dog can either see or hear me.  I had that opportunity to test in Florida because after rowing across the inter-coastal waterway from my home, I would take my dogs to a barrier island named Midnight Pass that had miles of beaches in both directions, and very few people in a mile in each direction.  I found out that Shep is quite the beach comber and having called out to him for many times to come back, Shep just kept smelling the dead fish and sometimes eating them too and continuing his lumbering adventure across the sand and the surf.  Shea in turn, would be following along with Shep and when she heard me, she would stop and sit and listen, then she saw my wave and ran back to me, trotting along in her majestic manner, never breaking out into a full on run that I saw, but Shep just kept going farther away and walking over to any of the  people’s blanket and hunted around in the bags for something to eat, and basically stomping on everything.
